Story of David Thompson among the first Montana traders
The article recounts David Thompson a Welsh born explorer and mapmaker who helped open the Columbian Basin. It covers his blue coat charity school education at Christ's Hospital in London, his apprenticeship with Hudson's Bay Company, and his switch to the North West Company. It notes his travels west to Montana and the Mandan regions, his actions at Astoria, and the vast but largely unpublished journals that Elliott Coues later made accessible.
