Freight Wars and Chinook Winds Shape Early Montana Days
Over 1863 to 1878 freight rivals cut rates from 60 cents to under 3 cents per pound, yet limited shipments in winter helped trigger Montana’s 1869 1870 downturn. Merchants overstocked, placer mining waned, and many firms failed. spring 1870 brought renewed activity as placers yielded again. The piece links freight peril, Chinook winds, and the era’s rough road to Montana’s growth.
