Dearborn Canal May Be Completed
Helena March 24 If a satisfactory agreement can be reached between the Carey land act board and the Ames Realty company of St Louis the Dearborn canal project will be completed and 32 000 acres of land reclaimed The Carey land ad board met Saturday at the capitol with attorneys representing the Ames Realty company and the matter was carefully gone over Eight years ago the Ames Realty company undertook to reclaim this land and after building a ditch 20 miles long quit work owing to its inability to get settlers to take the land up at 20 an acre Over 60 000 was spent when the project was thrown up At that time other irrigated lands in the neighbor hood of the Dearborn project were only selling for 10 an acre and settlers re fused to pay the prices asked for the Dearborn lands Since the project was thrown up land values have quadrupled and it is an easy matter to sell the land.

Baldy Smith Returns to Jail After Concealed Weapon Charge
David Smith known as Baldy Smith arrived from Portman in custody of Constable Ed Moore to serve a sentence imposed by Justice D L Baird. He faced a 30 day jail term and up to 200 dollars fine for carrying concealed weapons, but was fined 499 dollars by the judge. During Portman trial he disrupted witnesses and was fined 10 dollars for each interruption totaling 180 dollars. he plans to appeal to the district court claiming excessive penalties.
