Notable Men and Events of Montana's 1864 Legislative Council
Martha Edgerton Plassmann recalls the seven member Montana Territorial Legislature convened in Bannack City in 1864. She highlights Francis M. Thompson’s leadership in establishing the Historical Society and common schools, Thompson’s coat of arms plan, and connections to figures like Frank Lyman Worden, Merriman, Leavitt, and William L. Brown, the future New York Daily News proprietor. The piece recounts a Bannack dance involving Brown and the author, a teenage eye-opener on etiquette and memory lasting decades.
