Lettuce Germination in Hotbeds Tied to Soil Temperature
Lettuce seed in hotbeds germinates slowly when soil temperatures are high. At 85 to 90 F soil, germination takes about two weeks, while at 65 to 75 F it takes four to five days. Early hotbeds help by allowing temperatures to drop to 70–75 F before planting. Prompt germination occurs if seeds are in flats under burlap, even if soil beneath is hot. Cabbage seed shows similar sensitivity to temperature.
