Private Julian Stenson, wounded in action on 11 December in Europe, has been awarded the Purple Heart. The emblem and citation were forwarded to his parents in Montana, and he was told the award was dated 15 January. He remains hospitalized in France recovering.
Mary Sulgrove Chorpening wife of Col Claude H Chorpening arrives in Choteau from Arlington Virginia for about two months Her husband a captain later became colonel served with Army Engineers in Europe and England She volunteers in Washington aiding war efforts and plans to share insights from the capital with her hometown friends
At their regular meeting the Choteau Lions heard Rev. Bert A. Powell discuss Brotherhood Week aims uniting major American faiths for justice amity and understanding. He warned Nazism as a common enemy and urged national unity amid Europe’s threat. Maurice Zimmerman joined as a new member and Lions discussed pool committee plans and aid for the blind.
Joseph Peter Sirois aged almost 83 known as Jeff Sirois on Cho teau streets died at Choteau hospital after a brief illness. Funeral was held at St Joseph's Church in Choteau with Father James Sheerin officiating. Sirois born April 6 1868 in St Ann's Parish Quebec Canada. He lived in West Collins earlier and was a friend of County Commissioner N W Edwards. He was unmarried and family details are not known.
County Agent Maurice Zimerman announces a county-wide 4-H rally on Saturday March 10 at Fairfield High School gym. Open to boys and girls ages 10 to 21 regardless of club membership. R.E. Cameron will attend to discuss 4-H work in Montana and other states. National 4-H Mobilization week runs March 3 to 10 with activities including games music demonstrations and an educational wheel of chance quiz.
The Red Cross will offer a standard First Aid course starting next Tuesday March 6 at 7 30 p m in the county courthouse court room. Current First Aid certificates expire three years from issue and may be renewed only by completing another standard course.
The final Masonic party of the season will be held on Saturday night March 10. Committees are appointed and work on plans for the entertainment, dance and dinner. The event was postponed from February 24 due to the basketball tournament in Great Falls.

Three prominent Choteau young women Lola Mae Burns Lor etta Anderson and Harriet Paulus depart for clerical and accounting work at Hill Field near Ogden Utah. Burns returns to Chateau after stints at Army Air Base Great Falls Teton County Abstract Co and AAA. Anderson has served as AAA chief clerk for over three years Paulus studied at University of Washington before joining AAA. Roy Morgan calls the move a loss but expects useful service and success. Mrs LeRoy Anderson moves to Andersons desk and Bernice Foster joins the staff.
Beginning Monday March 5 at noon, property assessments will occur for real and personal property. Taxpayers receive two forms to report ownership, fill both and return one. Assessments take place in Agawam, Bynum, Pendray, Collins, Dutton, Power, Greenfield, Fairfield, and Golden Ridge with dates March 6 to March 24 and at the Chateau assessor’s office. Bring vehicle registration if needed.
Malone Pharmacy resumes business at its new Larson Building location after a week of move renovations. The drug store, formerly the Corner Store and Rexall, features a renovated interior, expanded fountain, new booths, and improved layout. Proprietor John Malone and his family relocated from Chateau after purchasing the Corner Store from Mrs. Sulgrove.
At the annual meeting of the Sons of American Revolution in Helena last Thursday Lyle H Standish was named a member of the Board of Managers. He will serve with W R Burroughs and Howard A Johnson, both of Helena. The organization plans a gathering in Butte on Constitution Day September 17.
The 1945 sugar program for home canning, announced by OPA Administrator Chester Bowles, requires housewives to apply at local War Price and Rationing Boards and declare planned canning. Boards will issue five pound sugar coupons. no War Ration Book four stamps will be valid. Canning fruit sugar is one pound per four quarts. total per person capped at 20 pounds, 160 pounds per family.
Farmers earning at least two thirds of income from farming may delay 1945 declarations until January 15 1946 and file annual returns if desired. Those expecting $500 or more must file declarations. if delayed to January 15 1946 they must pay the full estimated tax then. Special forms mailed to those who filed last year. extra copies from local Internal Revenue offices. Farmers not yet filing 1944 returns must do so by March 15.

John Becker left Tuesday for St Paul to visit his sister Mrs Charles Olson who has been a patient in a St Paul hospital for over two years. He joined a sheep shipment led by Phil I Cole. Miss Meda McLean is absent from her stenography duties at the law offices of George Coffey. Her niece Mrs Gordon Sullivan and baby arrived to be with Meda during illness. Mrs Margaret Davis recently returned from San Antonio Texas where she spent about two months with her daughter Mrs Joe Cartwright the former Kathryn Davis. Mrs Cartwright and her husband in the armed forces returned to Montana with her mother to remain for some time.

Cerebral hemorrhage claimed William F. Rieckhoff Sr. 80, of Sioux County Iowa, in Orange City. His son R L Rieckhoff managed Montana interests. funeral held in Orange City.
Commander J. R. Armstrong announced the American Legion post will sponsor another scrap paper shipment from Chateau. No exact date is set. likely several weeks away due to heavy countywide gathering work. Communities are asked to collect paper and place bundles at usual spots. Chateau pickup is this Sunday March 4 at 11 a.m. Residents should tie bundles securely and place them on the curb.
Pendroy plans to raise 360 dollars on the first day of the Red Cross emergency drive as Mrs. W J Earles announces. Col lins school reported 6200 dollars collected during 1942 43 under teacher Mrs Miles Averill, now turned over to the Red Cross. Drive chairman C W Burns reports all communities organized and work progressing.
Miss Marilyn Scott and Miss Donna Faye Dauwalder from the State University at Missoula came home for the weekend to attend a basketball tournament in Great Falls and visit relatives.
Judge R A Clearman fined Al Moore fifty dollars for a charge brought by Club Cafe management. Mrs Frances Forgey traveled from Augusta Tuesday for business and to renew friendships and plans to take a cook position at Frenchys Place near Wolf Creek on the highway route to Augusta and Choau.
Joe H. Ramaker, formerly a Great Falls trucker and lumberman, purchases the Nels Stengrimson sawmill on Waldron Creek North Fork of the Teton from Mr. Raymaker who will move his family to the Fairfield mill site after school closes. Ramaker plans extensive improvements including a planer and edger and to start logging soon to increase timber stock.
