July 4 Celebration in Choteau promises spectacular turnout

Choteau plans a two day celebration July 3 4 headlined by the American Legion Rodeo RCA approved for national points with top stock from Canada. Other events include a Quarter Horse Show fast draw championships parade dance and a 300 fireworks display. Parade Saturday features bands floats and prizes. Western Days merchant event runs July 3 with western attire and bargains.

Choteau High Students to Exhibit at State Fair

Fifteen Choteau High School students have been accepted in the fifth annual scientific achievement awards program sponsored by the Anaconda Company in connection with the Montana State Fair in Great Falls. Names include Judy Ann Cook Gary R. Olson Virginia Baker Janet Wood Charles Shannon David Dellwo Robin Anderson Diane McClue Daniel McDonald Dennis Van Auken Sally Sulgrove Vicki Cook Jan Voorhees Thomas Stott and David Shannon. Last year David Shannon won second place in the senior high division. Moira K. Davis of Butter was the first place winner. Students will exhibit their projects during Aug 1 week with $500 college scholarships awarded to the senior group by the Anaconda Company.

Choteau Lions Host North Central Montana Relays Meet

The Choteau Lions Club swim team hosts the North Central Montana Relays on Sunday June 27 at 1 p.m. at the Choteau pool with 34 relay races across four age divisions for both sexes. Six of seven local teams enter including Great Falls Yalks and Meadowlark CC, Chinook, Helena YMCA, and Chateau. Cut Bank is out, Kalispell may substitute.

Choteau Lions Swim Team Tops Previous Size Says Rathman

Stan Rathman announced the Choteau Lions Club swim team is the largest ever with 61 swimmers, up from last year. The schedule opens with Northcentral relays at Chateau Sunday and includes meets at Helena, Chinook, Butte, Kalispell, and Great Falls with A and B classifications this year.

Dedication set for new 430000 Bynum Diversion Dam

Dedication ceremonies tomorrow at the 430000 Bynum Diversion Dam northwest of Chateau will feature dignitaries from Everett Washington Denver Billings and Helena. District Judge R D McPhillips will give the main address with other speakers including Creath Tooley B P Bellport Harold Aldrich and L M Brownlow. The dam diverts Teton River water to Bynum Reservoir and serves about 45000 acres. Built with OEP funds after the 1964 flood, the project replaces the 1908 structure.

Dr Oscar Kenck Dies at 89 in Augusta

Funeral services for pioneer Dr Oscar A Kenck 89 of Augusta were held in Augusta Community Church with Rev Fred Crewe officiating. Born November 1 1875 in Helena Montana Territory he practiced in Helena then Augusta after 1900. He traveled the state in a horse drawn wagon office and served as physician, earned AMS honorary membership in 1957. Survived by wife Rita two sons Richard and Oscar grandchildren Richard Kenck and Arlene Pings two great grandchildren. Burial Augusta Cemetery.

Bar Breakin at Power Prompts Liquor Theft Report

Several bottles of liquor were stolen from Scotty's Bar in Power during an early morning break in after midnight. Sheriff Becker said 8 to 10 bottles of opened liquor and five full fifths were taken, along with cigarettes and possibly a beer case. No money was stolen. Entrance gained through a side door. Investigation ongoing.

Richard A. Koch of Chateau earned a bachelor of science in engineering at Arizona State University during spring commencement. He was one of 2,602 graduates. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Howard Koch.

David Shannon to London for International Youth Science Fortnight

David A Shannon one of 31 U S high school science students chosen to represent the United States at the Seventh International Youth Science Fortnight in London from July 28 to Aug 11. William G. Irwin of York has been named Knight of the York Cross, the top honor in the York Rite. He led Choteau Lodge as master in 1951, Teton Chapter Royal Arch Masons as high priest, Great Falls Council as master in 1963, and Bethany Commandery Knights Templar as commander in 1948. He also served 14 years as Choteau Lodge secretary and seven as Bethany Commandery recorder and acts as grand representative of the Grand Commandery of Texas and a four-body committee member.

Emil W. Schultz 76, of Dutton, died last Wednesday in Conrad hospital. Funeral services were held Saturday in Great Falls.
