Harlowtons 40th Birthday Saluted by Original Townsite Lot Sale
The town of Harlowton marked its 40th anniversary recalling the June 10, 1900 sale of lots in the original townsite conducted by Arthur Lombard and Richard Harlow. Lombard promoted the Jawbone railway from Helena toward Castle, while Harlow financed it. the line extended to Martinsdale and then Harlowton, with the first buyer Thomas Hanslik arriving from Castle. The 1907 fire nearly destroyed the Pioneer barber shop building saved by townspeople, and many early settlers from Martinsdale and Twodot remained. Lots were often paid with Jawbone railway IOUs, later valuable, and the Milwaukee railway eventually bought the Jawbone trackage.
