First Fur Trading Posts Opened in Montana Territory
In the early 1800s, Francois Larocque and Manuel Lisa shaped Montana’s fur trade. Larocque’s party traded with Crows and moved west after US restrictions, while Lisa founded Fort Remon on the Big Horn in 1807. David Thompson emerged later as a pioneering surveyor and explorer of the Canadian west and Montana region.
