Seed Peas Boost Montana Agriculture and Markets

Montana State College agronomist Clyde McKee notes seed peas from northwestern states supply most of the 600 000 bushels for 150 000 acres of canning peas. Canneries in the Bitterroot and Gallatin valleys spur growth, with higher valleys in Park Madison Carbon Flathead Lewis and Clark counties rising in importance. Contracts with reliable firms help secure markets and guide variety choices. Returns come from seed sales, soil benefits, grazing value and pea straw feeding. Yields vary. 20–25 bushels per acre typical in Gallatin, with some farmers reaching 60. Prices ranged 2.25–5 per cwt in Gallatin over 1923–1925. Following peas often raises subsequent wheat yields and soil nitrogen, while pea straw provides winter feed.

Barberry bush fight goes on in wheat regions

In Montana and spring wheat states a broad campaign to remove common barberry bushes aims to prevent vast wheat losses from black stem rust. W. L. Popham notes over 10,000 bushes cleared in Montana since 1918 and about 6 million destroyed across the spring wheat area, with Norway Denmark and Sweden showing rust control success after eradication. The effort targets urban and rural properties, as the barberry shrub fosters rust epidemics and must be eliminated.
