Drought Worsens in Teton County as Showers Fail

A weak, scattered rainfall did little to ease drought in Teton County. Ranges are described as gone in the eastern county, with stockmen seeking drought relief programs and cheaper shipping rates. The county seeks inclusion in the drought area to access special livestock shipping benefits and feed purchases. AAA officials indicated a new drought cattle buying program may start this week.

Miss Helen Gorham and Randall Swanberg Wed in Seattle

Miss Helen Gorham of Choteau married Randall Swanberg of Great Falls in Seattle on Tuesday. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Gorham, taught in Great Falls High School and earlier county offices. Swanberg is a young attorney with Swanberg and Swanberg. They will reside at the Pennsylvania apartments in Great Falls after August 1.

Water Carnival Set At Chateau Pool On July 31

Chateau pool officials announced a water carnival for Friday evening July 31. Contestants split into juniors under 12, intermediate 12 to 15, and seniors 16 and over. Events will be identical for males and females and the full program will be published next week.

Dietrichs in Cleveland Guests Visit Crarys Then Travel North

Mr and Mrs M C Dietrich and Marion Dietrich of Cleveland Ohio and Miss Mabel Dietrich of Helena spent Sunday with Dr and Mrs BE Crary. They left Monday for Glacier Park and Calgary. Mr Dietrich was principal of Teton county high school, left 15 years ago for Billings, and six years ago took a post as Cleveland high school principal.

Bremer and son visit on Fairfield business

Hr Bremer and his son Herbert traveled from Fairfield on Monday to address project matters. Bremer said the water situation has returned to normal after recent canal breaks, noting crop damage occurred but the situation is not critical.

Lars John Beck Buried Saturday

Lars John Beck 65 longtime Fairfield farmer died after a four year illness with paralytic strokes. He passed away Wednesday night at Choteau hospital. The funeral was held Saturday at the Methodist church with interment in Choteau cemetery. He was born April 15 1871 in Norway and lived in Michigan before moving to Great Falls then settled on the Fairfield bench in 1909. Survivors include his widow Mary and children Norman Elmer Ruth Hulda, plus siblings in the U S and abroad. Rev A Lunde led services. Survey of Proposed Biological Flooding Projects Completed

The U S Biological Survey announced completion of the survey and cost estimates for Benton Lake Freezout Lake and Priest Lake flooding projects for a bird refuge. Engineer R C Lillicrap led the work and the report goes to Washington with a stop in Minot for now.

Daggett Family Arrives from California to Stay Here

Frank Daggett and his son Frank Jr. arrive from California with relatives Mrs. C. D. McDonald and Mrs. E. J. Crary and Mrs. R. Sturgeon. They have rented an apartment in the McDonald block and Daggett will resume work as painter and decorator, a trade he formerly practiced locally.

Crary Family Reunion Hosts Visitors From Denver

Mrs E J Crary drove to Shel by last Wednesday to meet daughter in law Mrs Lyall Crary and her children Doug las and Lyall Jr plus their grandfather Rev Dr Douglas Cornell. Quiet county primary nears final day of voting

The county's quiet primary campaign ends next Tuesday with polls open 12 m to 7 p m at Chateau court house and the grade school. County clerk reports 20 absent voter ballot applications filed and notes deadlines for other precincts. Election supplies will be delivered to the precincts Sunday.

Tragic death of Leo Mellon after Sun River wreck

Leo Mellon 19, popular Texaco station operator, died in a Sunday morning auto crash at the mouth of Sun River canyon. Julius Hollenbeck, his companion, was seriously injured and is recovering at Chateau hospital. The accident occurred after they left a Saturday dance and attempted to return home. Police investigations indicate a wheel blowout caused by striking a guard and rock, ejecting both men. Leo suffered a fractured skull and neck injury, while Julius broke his lower jaw and sustained facial wounds. Hoyt and Klick brothers aided, Coroner Roberts summoned, and Leo’s body taken to Chateau. Julius transported for medical care. Leo was a longtime Chateau resident and Montana State College graduate.

Five Fires On Teton District Forest Since July 1

Forest Ranger George Duvendak reports five fires in the Teton district since July 1. Four were lightning caused, one man caused near Burnt Gulch on the north fork, with 167 people counted in the area. The Circle 8 ranch south fork fire burned about three acres before being checked. Governor Holt to Speak at Chautauqua Friday

Governor Elmer Holt will deliver the principal address at Teton's Chautauqua opening next Wednesday for a three day run. Officials say his appearance after the primary will be non political and he aims to show conditions in the state as they are. The program spans July 22 to 24 with multiple community acts, orchestra numbers, dances, readings, and a final one act play.

Six hundred attend H D picnic in Teton county park

About 600 home demonstration club members and families from across the county joined the first all county picnic in the city park. Eleven of thirteen clubs were represented with a pot luck dinner, contests, and a baseball game between Porter bench and Beck 4-H teams, Beck winning 4 to 3.

Fort Benton Nine to Meet Locals Sunday At Fort Benton

J Kent Midgett manager of the Chateau baseball team has arranged a Sunday game here with the Fort Benton nine. Both teams have shown strong form this season with 1000 per cent scoring and Benton defeating top teams such as the White Spots 7 to 9. Midgett will select a lineup from Twilight league standouts. H Earles and Shorty Dale expected to pitch. He urges a large turnout to justify the expense of bringing the fast Benton team here.
