Hot Weather Hurts Some Crops In Regional Grain Report
The article notes an unusually hot spell stressing grain crops in parts of the region while most fields should yield well. It highlights soil differences, yields between heavy and lighter soils, and observations from field operations. A farmer reflects on surprising results from a seventy five acre seed field and explains a recent solution.
Notes From a Farmer on Seedbed Dryness and Poor Stand
The narrator describes dry field conditions then sudden rain disrupting planting progress. He notes a five to six acre brown strip with a poor stand after heavy stubble burning and a previous 38 stand of over fifty bushels, reflecting on how small factors alter results. He also jokes about mismanaging eighty acres of tame mustard.
Tame mustard and weed invasion after seeding
A farmer recalls sowing mustard at grain depth in dry soil then rain crusted the surface making germination hard. He harrowed, saw more rains, and now has a tangle of weeds. He notes weed pressure and argues for federal grazing support to curb weed seed.
