The jury found United States Senator John Mitchell guilty of accepting pecuniary compensation for lobbying before federal departments in Washington. The verdict followed a tense, late-night deliberation with Judge De Haven presiding.
In Breziny, Petrokoff government, 12 workmen were killed and 13 wounded when troops halted a procession bearing red flags. Wounded were taken to hospitals. Separately, 8000 cotton mill workers at Zawiercie went on strike.
In Jefferson county south of Helena a band of sheep in charge of Herder L. J. Young was attacked by armed men. Fifty sheep were killed and Young escaped injury. The Spokane Ranch and Water Company may be involved as the victims. A clue points to a same-party motive as last year’s nonfatal shooting of company sheep in the same area.
The equestrian statue of General Thomas Francis Meagher was unveiled at the Montana state capitol amid a full ceremony. Gov Toole, Lt Gov Norris, U S Senator Carter and other dignitaries attended as crowds gathered from Helena and beyond on a holiday afternoon.

Topeka Kan July 3 The First National Bank the citys largest financial institution failed to open its doors Managers posted a notice on the doors stating the bank is closed by orders of the vice president and the comptroller of the currency has been notified An examiner will be sent here The closure follows complications in the affairs of C H Devlin a chief stockholder reputedly the richest man in Kansas His assets are estimated at seven million dollars and liabilities at two million as the Devlin affairs have been placed in the hands of a Missouri million dollar corporation chartered Saturday

Architect Geo H Shanley presented court house plans which were accepted with instructions for detailed specifications. An August 15 1905 bid opening for building proposals was set and special meetings were scheduled to address bonds road petitions and other business.

Newbury Massachusetts July 1 Secretary of State John Hay died at 12 25 this morning after pulmonary embolism. He had been improving through Friday and spoke with his wife and physicians before slipping into a final sleep. Doctors Scudder and Murphy were at his bedside. the end came shortly after they summoned them.
