Tax Appeal Board Opens New Path for Tax Challenges
The Montana Tax Appeal Board begins July 1 under the new state constitution, splitting the former Board of Equalization into Department of Revenue and a three member State Appeal Board. Counties hear initial appeals, then or both sides may escalate to the state board. Helen M. Peterson, publisher of the Hardin Tribune Herald, serves on the board and envisions state travel to hear cases. Appeals cover property income liquor license and other state taxes with workload varying by taxpayers. The Department of Revenue may appeal losses to create a possible state tax appeals court.
