A small Montana zephyr on the 17th damaged fences and haystacks, toppled a school omnibus causing no injuries as students returned to school next day. State horticulturist M. L. Dean returns from a six week tour reporting rapid fruit growth. He notes several thousand acres to be planted this year and a projected 2,000,000 dollars in orchard development around Billings Laurel Big Timber Lewistown and through the Judith and Musselshell valleys. He cites a new corporation forming to prepare over 2,000 acres for planting and strong promise on the Flathead lake area.

The S I ranch once owned by Couch Investment was sold to Chicago capitalist H W Brown for speculation and may be divided or sold in tracts. The 11 000 acre property between Chateau and the Montana and Great Northern railroad includes irrigation from Deep Creek and Spring Creek. The Cascade ranch of Helena interests was sold to J P Schmidt with about 3500 acres from Chateau southeastward. Schmidt plans to divide the land into small farms for Catholic settlers, with about fifty families expected and churches schools and townsites planned. The deal closed largely this year.
Sheriff Small and Officer Croft arrested a man wanted for robbery at Glasgow at the Two Medicine ditch camp, finding a valuable diamond ring among the loot. Browning officials chased John Cobell for horse stealing with no success. Chippewas at the Two Medicine lumber mill show reluctance to work while Browningites report dances and social activity. Barrett the Frye Bruhn cattle buyer shipped beef on the 20th and plans to buy more in the fall, earning local support.
Carl Be. Tschepen, visiting town, had his application for a water works franchise for Chateau favorably acted upon by the county commissioners. The outlook for success is very favorable as he advances plans to establish a spring creek driven supply. He plans to locate permanently in Chateau and will return by week end after a few days away in Conrad.
I H Federhen of Dupuyer has published a religious song titled Clinging to the Cross. The first edition was printed in the past ten days in the Acantha job rooms. Copies are available from the author or the Acantha for 40 cents.
Raymond J R Collins and Louis Dagott made a business trip to Chateau Thuracay. Mrs H L Halladay and Mrs D E Stansberry spent Wednesday at Mc Neals. A school board meeting was held at the school house Saturday afternoon. A dance at the school house is planned Saturday night by the Cunningham Bros. Joe Linder and Robert Haymes are visitors from Chateau. Mrs A L Hoy hosted a whist party Saturday evening in honor of Mr and Mrs H H Collins. W H Campbell has suffered tonsillitis the past week. Mrs J L Collins visited her daughter in law Mrs H fr Collins Thursday. J R Collins and Kathryn Campbell visited Wednesday evening with Mr and Mrs H L Collins. Mr Strickland and J R Collins traveled to Dupuyer on business Saturday. Ice harvesters were noted as active the prior week.
Fairfield Melvin Landswerk visits sister Mrs V Henning in West Butte. James Thorne travels to Chateau on business. Joan Zimmerman Jr. trips to Creat Falls at week start. Lydia Pugh of Stella Nebraska visits daughter Mrs L M Maorer on the bench. Mrs Frank Weaver Falls City and Kathryn Mourer Stella arrive to live on the bench with Mourer family. Mr Weaver expects a shipment of goods from the east. Mrs Alfred Tuason has been sick since the holidays. John Landswerk and wife visit Choteau and Burton beach. John Zimmerman Sr. calls on Choteau. August Teubert returns from Moore to spend winter with family. Otto joins him. George Bakers travels from the mountains to spend weeks on his claim.
George Sturgeon sixteen of Conrad area found dead in Birch creek canyon near the summit after leaving Conrad to reach Chick Grimsley's hunting camp sixty miles into the mountains. He reportedly traveled on foot after saddled horse and provisions were taken, exhausting himself in cold conditions. Local search by his family located his body Sunday morning.
Additional local visitors include Mrs J W Shields from Conrad and Mr Mrs E Leech from Dupuyer visiting friends. Carl Tschepen arrived from Havre to handle plumbing work. The Citizens State Bank was appointed a state depository for Montana funds, noted as commendable for its management.
John Zimmmerine delivered a 378 pound pig at 17 months to Pairfield market. The letter notes it as a notable hog for the area and sales efforts.
County Treasurer A C Burbank states that of $148,510 61 county property taxes levied in 1909 only $2 943 05 remains delinquent about six tenths of one percent of the total.
Leon Chenoweth and his wife welcomed a baby girl named Leona Francis born January 5. The child carries both her father’s name and that of her grandmother. The Chenoweths continue to reside in Seattle.
Bishop Brewer and Rev. Bodel arrived Saturday and conducted the opening services Sunday at the new Episcopal church. They will hold services each evening this week and continue through the coming Sabbath.
Rev. W. W. Van Orsdell the superintendent of the Greatalls district preached and attended the regular quarterly conference at the Methodist church over Sunday. He then traveled to Dupuyer and Valier to assist in special meetings this week.
W D Luther has entered his application for census enumerator in the county and is expected to be chosen. He previously served in Valley County ten years ago during the census process.
