High grade fuel from lignite coal explored by US Bureau of Mines
The United States Bureau of Mines reports 964.4 billion tons of brown coal in the northwest states that can be carbonized into a high grade briquetted fuel. University of North Dakota has produced over 400 tons of lignite briquettes, with briquettes yielding 72 to 81 percent fixed carbon and heat comparable to Pennsylvania anthracite.
