Letters From Soldier Neely Armstrong Christmas 1918

A soldier’s Christmas letter from Mont. to Bing Hodgskiss in England recounts arrival at an English rest camp, hints of soon heading to France, meals and liberty on the voyage, and daily camp life. Women’s War Work Focus at YWCA Meeting

In Teton County at the YWCA meeting held at the courthouse, Miss Brown of Great Falls spoke on strengthening the second line of defense by guiding girls. The group, including 25 Choteau women led by Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. M. C. Dietrich, pledged to raise 300 for a 4 million dollar national effort and support nurses and soldiers overseas.

Bammell and Davis Wed at First Methodist Church

Miss Edith M. Davis of Choteau wed Edmond M. Bammell of Choteau yesterday afternoon at the First Methodist church parsonage. Rev E L White conducted the ceremony with Judge M Davis present. The couple are well known locally and will receive many congratulations.

Babies Need Warm Clothing For War Relief Drive

In World War I era news, the American Aid Society organizes to collect baby clothes including shirts booties wrappers stockings and nighties from towns nationwide. Chateau Woman's Club leads local drive soliciting donated garments and asks residents to drop items to specified organizers by early next week.

Thrift Stamp Drive Boosts County Chateau Shares

County Chair man E. J. Hirshberg led the Women's club in a thrift and savings stamps sale adding 1500 to the Chateau shares on Monday. A thorough town canvass and school sales are underway with teachers aiding and many students expected to subscribe by week’s end.

Medical Examination for Class 1 Draft Selections Begins

The local draft board sends notices to all Class 1 draftees to appear in Chateau for physical exams starting Tuesday January 29. Eighty men are called per day for January 29 30 31 and February 1 with exams continuing the following Tuesday. The examining board includes Drs Rhoads H J McGregor J C McGregor E B Crary and Dr Du Bois of Conrad. Teton County lists 700 men in Class 1.

Appeal to American Men Women and Girls for War Council Fund

Government urged support for a $4,000,000 fundraising drive by the War Department and YWCA to aid Red Cross nurses, factory workers, and women in allied countries. Plans include Hostess Houses, emergency housing, work in Europe, and public campaigns to reach a $300 quota with house-to-house canvassing.

William F. Roby Dies in Peoria at 77

William F. Roby aged 77 died at his daughter Ella May Mellon’s home in Peoria after a two week illness. Born April 21, 1840 in DeGraffe Ohio he married Svelyn Richards in 1865 and had one child Ella May Mellon. Funeral at Methodist church with Rev. Hall. interment Chateau Cemetery. Card of Thanks from Otis and Russell Mellon and families.
