Last week Montana saw a wide temperature swing with Dec 27 to 30 highs near 0 and lows down to -43. By Jan 1 temperatures rose to 41 above, then a warming trend brought hard chinook winds, melting and returning snow, followed by fog, light rain, and another plunge below zero, illustrating Montana's unpredictable weather with roughly 90 degrees of variation and mixed precipitation.
The Choteau Chamber of Commerce meets with Don Fink presiding. Dues for 1969 are due and payable to Secretary George Higgins. State ments will be mailed. to continue promotional work, all businesses are urged to pay. Banquet plans include an out of town speaker, Feb 8 at Lions hall, with a ham dinner by Carrie Bagley for $2.50 per plate.
Jaycees state annual banquet announced with Boss of the Year Distinguished Service Award Senior Citizen Outstanding Young Educator and Special Physical Fitness Leadership Award to be presented. Walt Armstrong says event Tuesday Jan 21 at Moose Hall is open to the public with tickets at the door.
The Rainbow Assembly No 54 will stage an installation service on Sunday January 12 at 2 p.m. in the Masonic Temple. Lynn Jackson will be installed as worthy advisor with Laura Lee Larsen as installing officer. The public is invited.
Choteau City Council held a two part meeting with a full city employee session followed by a regular session. The council approved plumber and gasfitter permits, contracted used chairs and light fixtures from the old high school for 59 dollars 50 cents, and urged enforcement of snowmobile prohibitions on city streets. A new police car is expected within a week. Numerous claims were approved including supplies fuel and services from local vendors and Montana Power Co for city buildings pump station and street lighting.
Highway Patrolman Richard Chase investigated three accidents in five days after January began. A 1951 pickup hit by a Great Northern train near Power injures none. a 1962 Ford Falcon rolled near Dutton with multiple injuries. a 1963 Plymouth struck a 1964 Buick near Fairfield leaving head injuries and six children aboard. Chase warns drivers to slow for slick conditions.
John Bink, chief ski instructor, announces a five Saturday all in one package for ages 8 to 14 at Teton Pass. The deal includes lessons bus transport from Great Falls to the ski area lift tickets rental gear and supervision by a certified instructor. Cost is 65 with a 12.50 deduction if the child supplies skis poles and boots. Contact John Bink at 454-2161 or 761-7180.
The first blood drawing of 1969 succeeded with 75 volunteers and 69 pints collected after 6 rejections. Glen Inbody reached his fourth gallon, while Ann Chane Walt Armstrong Bill Jones Pendroy and George J Waldner joined two gallon donors. First time donors included Laura Richert Janet Truchot Wayne Dunning and others.
Sam Luinstra, president of the Teton County Sportsmen's Association, announced a meeting for Tuesday January 14 at 8 p.m. in the courthouse court room. A showing of Avalanche Control will follow the business session. The trap shoot range is east of the highway across from the Chateau Country Club with one shoot completed and another planned before Easter.
Sandi Robbins Teton County's Junior Miss for 1969 travels to Kalispell to contest the state junior miss pageant. The state winner earns a shot at national finals later this year. She is sponsored by the Choteau Jaycees with John Arnold as pageant chairman.
Montana State Highway Patrol will station a driver's license examiner at Chateau court house on Tuesday January 14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applicants should contact the examiner before 11 a.m. or 4 p.m. for scheduling potential tests.
Northern Division clubs begin the final two months as Fairfield Cut Bank Browning vie for the crown. Chateau hosts Shelby Friday and Sunburst Saturday after a heavy loss to Chinook Sugar Beeters 85 70. Sugar Beeters led by Harshman and Ken Harshman dominated the game. Rudy Ameline and Ray Smith paced Chateau.
Teton Memorial Hospital Association will hold its annual meeting Monday January 13 at 8 pm in the Teton County courthouse in Choteau. Ron Hinman reports a Lutheran Homes and Hospitals representative will discuss hospital finances and the board will report on the past year’s activities and donations. Three directors will be elected to the 11 member board, a chairman and new secretary will be chosen. the meeting is open to the public with a $1 membership vote.
Noble Armstrong 67 of Conrad died Wednesday night at St. Mary's Hospital in Conrad. Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Pondera Valley Lutheran Church with Rev. Daniel Stime officiating. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery. He was born May 14, 1901 in Payne Ohio and moved to Brady in 1910. He married Florence England August 24 1929 and farmed in Brady and Conrad. Survivors include his widow three daughters two sons brothers and sisters and 21 grandchildren. Pallbearers were nephews Gene Styren Herbert Styren Lawrence Styren Ronald Bokma Lee Roy Fusan and Henry Fusan.
Gov. Tim Babcock appointed Maurice W. Smith to the State Board of Hail Insurance to fill the unexpired term of his son William E. Smith. The 56 year old Dutton grain farmer will serve until April 18, 1971, with no Senate confirmation required. The board also includes James Dethman Sidney Fred Bitz C Calf Big Sandy and others led by Agriculture Commissioner C Lowell Purdy and Treasurer Alex B. Stephenson. William Smith had led the agency since 196 a previous chair E K Bowman died in 1962.
Arnold Gettel of the Cascade County Farmers Union announced a public meeting to discuss farm income and threats from non farm corporate influence. The session is January 10 at 9 a.m. in the MFU State Office in Great Falls with invitations to bankers, PCA and FHA staff, co op leaders, FFA members, teachers, clergy, and businesspeople from Teton, Chouteau and Cascade counties. A no host lunch will follow at noon. Ted Kasper urged Teton FU members to attend.
John Deere service department added at Choteau Implement Co. Art Anderson continues as shop head with Jim Weinert and Tom Phillips as mechanics. Owner Pete Ekegren cites John Deere policy requiring dealers to offer full service. Annual John Deere Day planned for later this month with date to be announced in the Acantha.
James Crawford of the Teton County Republican Central Committee invites residents to hear daily Legislative reports from Helena. Broadcasts air twice daily on KMON at 7 55 and 5 35 p m and on KSEN at 7 15 am and 5 30 pm. Reports run five days a week during the session, sponsored by the State Republican Central Committee, with local summaries by Rep Nels Hemstad and Sen John Lyon.
Funeral services for Clinton Miars, 70, are today at 2 p.m. at Zwerner Mortuary with Rev. Marlow Engberg officiating. Interment in Chateau Cemetery with veterans graveside rites. Miars died Tuesday at Teton Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Minnesota and later worked as a ranch hand at the Doug Crary ranch. Survivors include a son Clayton of Forsyth and a daughter Mrs. Fred Nelson of Livingston.
