High Court Affirms Hanging of Jefferson County Killer Roy Walsh
The Montana Supreme Court upheld the district court verdict and affirmed Roy Walsh’s death sentence for the 1923 murder of Renova storekeeper Albert Johnson in Ke nova. Walsh and accomplice Arthur Sfughes hired to rob the store, shot Johnson through a closed door and fled in a stolen Cadillac. Johnson dies in a Butte hospital after naming a shooter he could not identify. The court ruled trial discretion on witness exclusion and the admissibility of Walshs confession would be decided on evidence of circumstances and not disturbed on appeal unless clearly weighty.
