Pierre Chouteau and the Yellowstone First West River Steamboat
In 1831 Pierre Chouteau built a sturdy side wheel steamboat named Yellowstone to explore the upper Missouri. Rivermen laughed at the small engine and single shaft but the vessel reached Fort Pierre before shoals halted the voyage. A second voyage in 1832 reached Fort Union and spurred larger designs, leading to the Assinaboine and later Montana river trade with vessels like Chippewa and others.
