Montana Taxpayers Association Reports Property Tax Study

The Montana Taxpayers Association analyzes 1975-76 property tax rates showing larger communities face higher levies while small towns enjoy lighter burdens. It cites city levies over 20,000 averaging 282.18 mills and small towns under 500 at 206.52 mills, with Alberton and Manhattan as exceptions. The university levy drops to 5.60 mills and Chateau tax totals 46.30 per 1,000 of valuation.

Bicentennial Committee to Meet Thursday in County Courthouse

The Bicentennial Committee led by chairman Jesse Malone will convene this Thursday February 19 at 8 p m in the County Courthouse. All committee members and interested residents are urged to attend the public meeting and review local tax levies.

Chateau Bulldogs End Strong In Conference Play

Chateau Coach Terry Reistad’s team finished 10-4 in league play, placing third behind Shelby and Cut Bank. They upset first-place Shelby 61-60 earlier in the week and beat Chinook 61-35, using a tight press to limit Chinook’s offense. Jenson Scott and Buck led scorers. Chinook’s Williams and Hamilton topped the Beeters in spots, but Choteau dominated with defense and balanced scoring.

Hospital Aux States Dance For Equipment

The Teton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary held a February meeting to view a heart monitoring system demonstration by Mennen-Greatbatch Co. A Bicentennial benefit dance on March 6 at 9 p.m. at the Chateau pavilion will raise funds for the monitor. Donations to the fund came from Mrs. Buck, Mrs. Whipple, Mrs. Stenson, and in memory of Kathleen Rathman Thronson and Mrs. D. P. Fabric.

Coulter Wins Midas Bowling Contest Trip

Bob Coulter of Dutton finished second in the national Midas bowling contest. He bowls for Chateau and Great Falls and posted a 231 series at Little's Lanes in Great Falls to qualify for the Midas Team. He and wife Rosemary will depart Feb 28 for Windsor Locks Connecticut for an all expense paid trip to the Midas Pro Bowl finals telecast. He is Montana’s first qualifier for the program.

Tourney Tickets Still on Sale for Shelby Event

Tickets for the Northern Class A basketball tournament in Shelby are available at the school office during normal hours. Superintendent Robert W. Gormely notes Chateau is in the G-H section of the Shelby gym as in past years. Tickets cost $10 each and student reserved seats are also on sale this week.

Choteau Bulldogs Earn State Runner-Up In Wrestling Meet

The Choteau High School wrestling team placed second at the Class A State championships in Cut Bank. Ronan dominated with 133 points while Choteau edged Glasgow for second by a slim margin as Steve Hinman took third and Mike Hamilton placed runner-up in a strong team showing.

Gas Tax Funds Help Build City, County Roads

Montana cities and counties receive 6.5 million annually from state gas tax funds. City and county shares are allocated by rural mileage, rural population, and county land area, for constructing maintaining or repairing streets and roads. Local officials set priorities but must notify the Department of Highways to avoid project duplication with federal aid.

Registration Closing Date Announced by County Clerk

Teton County Montana closes voter registration at 5 p.m. on March 7 1976 for the School Trustee and Hospital District elections to be held April 6 1976. Electors may register at the County Clerk’s office or with deputy registrars or notaries. Deputy registrars listed for multiple precincts and parties coordinated by county committees. An instruction session was held in Choteau for registrars and notaries.
