Barley Mosaic Virus Tackled by MSU Researchers
Barley stripe mosaic virus is studied by Montana State University plant pathologist Dr. T. W. Carroll and colleagues. The disease cost Montana growers about 1.1 million dollars on 1.4 million planted acres in 1967. Seed infection testing allows certification if under five percent, but over five percent prevents certification. Infected seed may be sold as common seed, or unused seed should not be sold or planted. Carroll seeks understanding of seed transmission and variety susceptibility to develop economical control, hoping for future seed treatment before planting.
