January 1977 Records Mild For Our Area
The past month posted unusually mild temperatures with below zero readings on only five days. The Chateau Weather Checking Station peaked at 55 degrees on January 18, while precipitation totaled .16 inch, well under last January’s .52 and the long-term .32 inch average. Over the last week highs and lows ranged from 22 to 45 degrees with light or no precipitation on most days.

Patrol Reports Few Accidents During January
Patrol officer Roger Kelly states January in Teton County saw about six accidents mostly minor fender benders. He notes 1976 had four fatalities and urges defensive driving to reduce tolls while detailing an unusual Jan 26 crash near Dutton involving Andrew Jones and Thomas Audet with no injuries.

The primary will be held next Tuesday across Teton County to narrow candidates for Clerk of Court and County Commissioner. Four Democrats and two Republicans compete for Clerk. C E Rich, representative of Congressman Marlenee, met with the Choteau City Council and a Citizens Committee to discuss designating Choteau as flood prone. Snow Course Measurements Show Very Low Snow Depths
Ray Mills of the U.S. Forest Service reports the Teton Canyon stations showing the least snow in years with about 50 percent of normal. He anticipates Sun River readings to be low as well though February and March may add runoff. Waldron station on Feb 1 logged 13.6 inches snow and 3.4 inches water. Mount Lockhart measured 23.8 inches snow and 6.2 water, vs long term norms of 25.5 and 9.9 and 50.5 and 15.6 respectively. Last year at this time Waldron had 25.6 inches snow and 6 inches water. Mount Lockhart 49.6 inches and 14.4 water.

Plans for Choteau’s first Winter Carnival move forward with queen contest dances ice fishing sail boating and free breakfasts plus events at Teton Pass Ski Area scheduled for February 19 20 and 21. Organizations including the Chamber Kiwanis Lions Club Soroptimists and schools will participate.
