Montana farmers push for higher wheat loan price in Senate hearing
Two Montana figures Jim Stephens and Jack Gunderson testified before the U S Senate Agriculture Committee in Washington seeking a 25 percent rise in the national loan rate for wheat and feed grains. They cited a Montana operation producing 61 500 bushels in 1971 with a $513 50 deficit at a $1 10 price, arguing a higher loan would raise income to about $19 065 while government costs rise only on unrepaid loans. The witnesses noted backing from Governor Forrest H Anderson and the National Farmers Organization alongside MGGA and MFA support.
