The Choteau Bulldogs host Stanford in a non conference opener on the nearly finished high school gym floor. Officials say the building includes permanent bleachers lights scoreboard and backboards with a capacity of about 2500 and cost 95000.
The annual Perch Derby at Bynum Reservoir, run by the local VFW Post, drew a large turnout with over 200 cars reported by a game warden. Ed Breeze of Augusta won the grand prize of 96 dollars for a 1 lb 4% oz perch, Ronald West of Great Falls took the men's prize with a 1 lb 3% oz fish, and Mrs. J. W. Ewinski of Great Falls won the women's prize with a 1 lb 2% oz perch. A 7 year old, Steve Kincaid, won the kid’s prize for a 1 lb 4% oz fish donated by Schroeder Hardware. Bob Dunn chaired the derby with Leo Pierre handling advertising as officials thanked radio operators for lake contact. Proceeds near 150 dollars will go to Teton Memorial Hospital.
Harry J. Colvin, 66, died Saturday at Teton Rest Home and was buried Tuesday in Chateau. Born April 25, 1888 in Clearfield Wyoming, he lived in Bozeman before moving to Chateau in 1929. Survived by wife Charlotte M. Suiste and brothers Boyde A. of Oregon and Emil of Washington. He worked as a packer for the U S Forest Service and farmed nearby. Pallbearers named Frank Gordon, Herb Moore, Chick Sulgrove, Snappy Stenson, Eddie Howard, Ray Gibler.
Pauline Weseman of Great Falls spent the weekend with her parents Mr and Mrs Glen Wiseman.
District Governor M. E. Evanson of Lions International will speak at a Ladies Night gathering of the Choteau Lions Club at 7:00 pm next Tuesday February 8 1955. Evanson based in Billings heads 39 clubs in his state section and is a long time Lions member with awards and leadership roles.
The Choteau Independent Guard went 1 2 in three weekend games. They defeated Augusta 66 55 on Sunday, lost 56 50 to the Cads in a close battle, and fell 91 84 at Brady in a rough finish. McFarlane led Choteau with 20 in the loss to the Cads while Blixrud scored 25 in the Brady setback.
In Justice Sulgrove's court Leroy Wurtz of Choteau paid a $10 fine for exceeding the night speed limit. In Justice Irwin's court Edward Lilleans of Choteau was fined $10 for failure to stop when entering a highway.
On Friday night January 28 the Mothers of Chateau with Soroptimist club support staged the March of Dimes appeal. They have collected $207.88 to be given to the Teton Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis and expect the total to surpass prior efforts. Mr and Mrs Martin Johnson left by train for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester for a medical checkup.
The Teton Memorial Hospital benefit at Chateau City Park Pavilion raised 651.86 for the hospital board. A 45.00 donation and Agawam Community club's 32.40 aided the fund, enabling full payment for the new X ray machine at Teton Memorial Hospital.
John Marshall Bolsinger, 15, former Pendroy resident, died January 17 in Los Angeles, where he had lived eight years. Funeral services were held January 21 in Los Angeles. interment at Inglewood cemetery. His parents and a sister are buried in Monarch, Montana, and a nephew George Brunson survives.
William Bryan Truchot a member of a pioneer Truchot family from Teton county died in Portland Oregon after a lingering illness on January 27 He was born September 8 1896 near Choteau and educated at Choteau St Charles Helena Wentworth and Lincoln high school He served in World War I and later worked as a rural mail carrier from Oswego Oregon He is survived by his widow a daughter sisters brothers and four granddaughters He was known as a baritone soloist in Chateau and Oswego and sang at funerals bringing comfort through song.
Mi and Mrs. Paul Kropp departed last weekend for Mesa Arizona where they will reside for a couple of months.
A. B. Guthrie Jr. of Great Falls, son of the late pioneer Choteau educator A. B. Guthrie Sr., was named to the Montana Board of Education by Gov. J. Hugo Aronson on Tuesday. He studied at the University of Washington and Montana State University, worked in a Lexington editoral role, and earned a Nieman fellowship at Harvard. Guthrie wrote The Way West and other novels and screenplays including Shane, and is married to Harriet Larson.
Choteau defeated Browning 52 to 29 in Friday’s Northern Conference game at Browning with Roy Snyder anchoring defense and Ray Anderson limited by fouls. Jim Lohse added 11 points as Pete Kampe was sidelined by illness.
Eddie Howard, Teton County polio drive chairman, reports Dutton Lions Club sent 2688.38 dollars to the county total. The club’s annual fundraising Monday night drew similar strong results to last year with over 3000 dollars received from the Dutton community and other events noted as Mother’s March and school efforts.
The district court term that began January 24 adjourned Monday after jurors were seated when Judge R M Hattersley announced Adelaide V Lenci versus the Great Falls Elks Lodge had been continued for the term. The case was understood settled for two hundred dollars.
A daytime fire at the Parkway Cafe caused near total loss to the interior. Owner Mrs. Ed McFarren and patrolman Morris Black helped raise the alarm around 2:20 am. Firefighters battled a smoky blaze, pinpointing the grill area as the origin in one of the city’s oldest frames owned by Harry Young of Great Falls.
Dr Lloyd J Michael 46 a government veterinarian formerly of Choteau was killed January 20 when his station wagon was struck by a southbound Katy Flyer at the Ocheltree Stilwell crossing near Spring Hill Kansas. Engineer R S Power said the train traveled about 70 mph. car went 75 to 100 yards off the tracks. Survived by wife and two daughters. Funeral services held in Spring Hill and Lawrence Kansas.
Judge R M Hattersley sentenced an 18 year old Great Falls youth to five years in prison for statutory rape but suspended the sentence. County Attorney Leo Murphy said the act occurred in Fairfield the previous weekend with a 16 year old Great Falls girl involved.
Jake Luinstra completed the purchase of Tot Toggery from Leigh Nett, a children’s wear shop in the Larson building. Luinstra plans remodeling and a balcony to house his crop insurance business, with Mrs. Geraldine Lehnert taking over as manager. Nett said he will likely join Teton Plumbing and Heating Company.
Milton McNea was named president of the Chateau Chamber of Commerce for the coming year at a noon meeting. Officers include Al Hensley vice president, Robert Crocker secretary, and several directors. James Henderson discussed House Bill 128 and Senate Bill 71, warning the bills could close Montana businesses. The chamber sent messages to the Governor and Helena delegation opposing the measures. Ray Davidson noted a county wide road planning meeting on Thursday January 20 and a future planning board. Jerry Breen urged a large turnout for the February 15 chamber dinner with Montana Chamber speakers. Ed Obernolte outlined the ticket sales campaign for the annual event.
Mr and Mrs George Sprinkle were identified as callers for the Conrad business on Montay.
