Christmas Seal Campaign Prompts Countywide Allotments

Improvements Under Way at Chateau City Park

Work began this week on a WPA led beautification program for Chateau city park and nearby areas. Construction includes a half mile race track around the baseball diamond with inner and possible outer fencing, graded picnic grounds, a two inch irrigation line, more drinking fountains, a double rest room, pavilion roof updates, and rip-rap rock walls along Spring Creek. H. H. Bleecker is the WPA foreman in charge.

Moose Lodge Reorganizes. officers elected after inactive period

Chateau Lodge No. 415 Loyal Order of Moose held a reorganization meeting at the K. P. hall with about 30 members from Sunburst and Great Falls. New officers were elected. Richard Reed and Gordon Meisel assisted as sergeant of arms and assistant while Carl Hoelzel installed. A class of new members was inducted and a lunch followed.

The Chateau troop of Boy Scouts will hold their annual Christmas party at the high school auditorium this Saturday night starting at 7 30. Free candy for all the kids and a short program will be presented. Everyone is invited.

After the November 30 tax collection from the 6 mill general school tax superintendent Inez Eckford apportioned 19524 84 to county districts at 966 per pupil. She also distributed 37013 11 among four accredited high schools: Teton 14414 01 Fairfield 38969 76 Power 37851 59 Dutton 5777 75. The total exceeds last year’s 52274 31.

Prompt Remittance Urged for County Christmas Seals

Mrs. A. W. Walker county Christmas Seal chairman urges remittance for seals mailed to residents to fund tuberculosis work. Expenses include x rays for 24 reactors, bus and serum costs. Four hundred dollars in seals mailed. about half paid. A $300 shortfall is anticipated. Dutton leads county in seal sales as banner prize race begins.

A federal grant of 9143 dollars from the Works Progress Administration will fund improvements to Choteau streets alleys and boulevards. Winter Wheat Gains Traction on Power-Dutton Project

Farmers on the Power Dutton Soil Conservation Service project planted about 6500 acres of winter wheat reversing a four year trend toward spring varieties. They cite wind erosion control from strip cropping trash cover and claddy mulch as key for returning to winter wheat with last two summers showing 5 to 19 bushels higher yields than spring wheat in the same area. The program is run in cooperation with the Soil Conservation Service.

The Choteau Woman's club hosted a Tuesday afternoon Christmas party at Mrs. W. W. Scott's home with large attendance. A program featured Mrs. Richard Vick, Miss Ruby Miller, Miss Nelson, Mrs. R. E. Nelson, Miss Ellingson, Mrs. Manusa, and others, followed by a lunch. Mrs. C. W. Boussard was named library publicity chairman for library news releases.

Peterson to Take Sheriff Office Today After Court Ruling

The Montana state supreme court refused a rehearing in the A O Peterson vs J L Shell Billings sheriff contest. The court reversed a lower court ruling and ordered Peterson declared sheriff of Teton county with fees and costs awarded. Peterson plans personnel and policy changes on taking office.

CCC Enrollments Open at County Welfare Office

Applications for Civilian Conservation Corps enrollment are being received at the county welfare office. Those who apply now may be enrolled on January 6, 1940, with the rule first come, first served for non-relief applicants. Welfare-family youths receive priority. Teton County quota is four carefrees for the Native Class and is expected to fill soon.
