The So Called Spanish Swindle Warns US Public
The Department of State reports a Spain based fraud ring writing to distant US relatives about a supposedly imprisoned Cuban prince and a hidden fortune. Letters promise one fourth of the fortune for guardianship of a daughter if funds are sent to a priest in Spain. The scheme, active for nearly twenty years, uses forged notices and varied villains. Spanish law hampers immediate arrests though several gang members are detained for trial.

A Mother's Criticism
Sigismund Goetze recalls painting his own portrait as a birthday surprise for his mother. She discovers the work in the studio and questions its subject, prompting him to claim it is someone they have been painting. She responds that the subject is uninteresting and leaves him deeming the portrait a waste of time.
