Proposed Payment Increases For Unemployed Is Under Study
Montana's State Advisory Council heard proposals to raise the maximum weekly unemployment insurance to 62 dollars without higher employer taxes. The plan would raise the current 52 dollar benefit to 62, still behind the national average and federal targets. The council also approved amendments to align state law with executive reorganization and will reconvene December 21 to finalize recommendations for the 1973 Legislature.

Debate Over Strip Coal Mining Splits Montana Ahead of 1973
Montana faces a major debate over strip coal mining with arguments for new jobs and tax revenue versus environmental damage and water shortages. Commissioner Ted Schwinden drafts a strengthened reclamation bill to curb un reclamable sites and impose yearly permits. The plan would empower state oversight, enforce fines, require topsoil replacement, and allow citizen lawsuits for damages. Health officials defend Colstrip as meeting standards while other groups push to block new power plants and curb out of state interests.
