Chateau Council Buys New Garbage Truck
In a special meeting last Thursday morning the Chateau City Council approved purchasing a new garbage truck. Council members McCauley and Hamilton and public works head Bob Erickson evaluated bids from H and H Implement for a model 1600 International Loadstar with Garwood LP 716 packer, at 6 857 plus 317 45 options, after testing Great Falls trucks. The group favored the Garwood packer over Bob's Ford Sales bid of a 1968 Ford F 600 two ton with the same packer at 7 409 35.

Forest Service Closes Areas To Public Use
Ranger Joe Higgins announces a Rocky Mountain Division closure of all United States lands within Lewis and Clark National Forest to public entry except highway travel and established campgrounds. Entry permits will be issued only for Summit and Cave Mountain campgrounds. Fire danger is extreme and crews remain on fire detail in Western Montana and Northern Idaho.

Mrs Hemstad Dies in Great Falls Hospital
Mrs Guttorm Hemstad a 76 year old Dutton resident died Monday in a Great Falls hospital where she had been a patient since August 5 She was born in Morris Minnesota on August 25 1891 and moved to Montana in 1930 She married in 1948 lived in Dutton until 1959 then moved to Mesa Arizona She is survived by a widower a son George Juergens of Morris Minnesota a daughter Joyce Homberger of Dutton six sisters six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews She was active in St Peters Lutheran Church Mesa and the Order of Eastern Star.

Perry Sells Chateau Barber Shop After Eight Years
Lawrence Perry, longtime Chateau barber in the Larson building, has sold the shop to John Clausen of Malta. Clausen will keep Perry’s hours and prices. Perry thanks patrons and hopes they continue visiting. Also visiting were Mrs. Ruth O’Neil’s relatives, Mr. and Mrs. George Tracy and daughter Nancy Casey of Great Falls.

Wheat Varieties Designated Undesirable for 1968 Support
Thirteen wheat varieties have been listed as undesirable for price support next year by the Department of Agriculture. Montana official Viola J. Herak says the move aims to improve milling or baking quality and regional compatibility. Undesirable varieties will be eligible for support but receive no premiums and incur a 20 cent per bushel discount.

Black Bear Attacks Fairfield Youths Near Gibson Campground
A 300 pound black bear mauled two Fairfield youths Friday near Gibson Reservoir injuring one and biting the other. Jerry Brown 12 and Steve Heyer 13 were camping with Heyer’s parents when the bear climbed onto their table, biting Heyer first then Brown. Both boys were treated at Teton Memorial Hospital Brown remains hospitalized with head arm and shoulder injuries while Heyer was released. State game warden Paul Mihalovich plans to trap the bear for testing and the Mortimer Gulch Forest Service campsite will stay closed until capture. Brown said he plans to return to the mountains citing no impact on hunting and fishing. The attack is blamed on food shortages fed bears and fires increasing wildness.

Mrs J E Byrne Dies At 87 In White Sulphur Springs
Mrs J E Byrne 87 of White Sulphur Springs died last Tuesday. She was daughter of early Montana pioneers Buckingham and Ellis and lived in Chateau where her husband ran a plumbing business. She owned a coffee and candy shop and held East ern Star offices in 1942. Survivors include son Edward and daughter Ramona Gaffney of Spokane, five grandchildren and a great grandchild. Burial followed in White Sulphur Springs Cemetery after services last Thursday.

Harvest Nears Finish Low Protein Wheat Across Chateau Area
With most winter wheat harvests done, Chateau area farmers report a large crop but low protein content. Ralph Groth of the Farmer's Union Grain Terminal Association and Ray Ballantyne of General Mills note protein levels between 10 and 11 and sufficient railroad cars to move the grain. Weather looks to bring scattered showers in early September, potentially hampering seeding. Market prices for wheat are falling below 1.30 per bushel, pressuring farmers to store crops while prices may rise later. harvest completion extends to Bole, Dutton, Farmington, and surrounding areas within days to two weeks.

The United States Government sues Naranche and Konda Construction Company and Aetna Casualty and Surety Company for 6500 in damages. It alleges an 808 332.30 contract to build Minute man Missile roads in Teton county led to removal of about 130000 cubic feet of terrain from land the government partly owns to obtain rock and gravel without the government’s consent. The action spanned July 1 to November 1 in 1966. Attorneys for the plaintiff are Scott and Linnell of Great Falls.
