Montana Farm Labor Picture in 1949 Shifts Demand and Supply
The Montana state employment service reports more itinerant farm workers moving through the state and higher farm placements so far in 1949. By midyear placements rose to 6,000 from 4,500 a year earlier, suggesting harvest months may meet all labor needs and crop losses from shortages are unlikely. Also, fewer itinerant combines may be needed as burnouts enter custom work, while drought and western yields alter regional demand.
