Provisions Strengthen Set-Aside Land Rules For 1973
The USDA announced higher per acre payment deductions for below average quality set aside land in the 1973 wheat and feed grain programs. Montana official Joel Antrim said deductions will apply against total payment base acres, not just set aside acres, a change aimed at preventing exploitation where poor quality land is set aside to gain monetary advantage. The move follows a 1971-72 study showing few producers affected, with most participants already using quality set-aside land.

Range Feed Outlook Shows Mixed Conditions Across State
Range feed averaged 82 percent of normal on August 1, down from 85 on July 1 and 79 in August 1971. Northcentral and central areas report short feed due to dry weather, while eastern regions benefit from above normal rainfall. Showers in late July eased drought, grasshopper activity is rising in the southwest, stockwater is adequate, and cattle and sheep overall are in good to excellent condition in the east, with active livestock marketing at strong prices. Some herd reductions occur in drought-impacted areas.
