Voters in Chateau and surrounding areas backed a petition to abolish Teton County high school. About 599 valid signatures were gathered by the deadline, with an estimated 100 duplicates or ineligible names. The measure goes to the November ballot to decide if the county school is replaced by a district.
A week of traffic incidents near Chateau ended with Martin Brandvold 53 of Power dying from a skull fracture after a bicycle hit a car driven by Rev. Father Russel Scheidler of Fairfield on Power Bole road Switch Lane 11. An inquest found the priest not responsible and blamed the cyclist for failing to yield at the main road. A separate collision six miles north of Chateau involved Ray Rabbitt of Choteau and Howard Ness of Boulder City Nevada.
Fairfield Irrigators defeated Choteau 12 to 6 in the season finale after a rain delay. Choteau led 4 1 before Fairfield exploded for five runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth with notable scoring by McCormack Shoquist and the Anderson brothers. Choteau finished third in the Triangle league as Power and Fairfield tied for second.
The Chateau city band will rehearse tonight under band director Irshal Davis. All interested musicians are urged to attend including last year's high school band members. Practice starts at 8 pm in the high school auditorium with next month public appearances being arranged. The Monday turnout was weak with limited experienced players.
Royal Theater enhances its screen quality with new projection machine heads and lamp houses to improve film clarity. Manager Hugh Reid states the system now compares favorably with theaters nationwide and notes upcoming carpet installations and interior lighting for decorative effect.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ole Kregness 73 longtime Teton county settler were held at Trinity Lutheran church after her death Friday in Choteau. Burial followed in Choteau cemetery beside her husband who died three years ago.
Lions club pool opens to the 4-H members for the annual 4-H fair on Saturday Aug 31 with public access closed from 4 to 4:30 and guests from 4:30 to 6:00. Members must show 4-H cards and bring their own swimsuits as no suits are rented. The event supports civic enterprise.
The Chateau fire department battled a brush fire Monday afternoon near Moose Hall north of the city. Using a spray wagon and booster tank on the new fire truck, firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 20 minutes. The fire threatened Moose Hall and the seed cleaning establishment north of the city water works.
Miss Grayce E. Thompson of Chateau completed the Third Administrative Intern program funded by the United States Civil Service Commission and an interdepartmental committee in Washington. The program trains selected federal workers for administrative roles. Thompson, ranked among the top 30, will return to work as head of clerical training in the War Department.
Fire across five acres of dense timber near Olney Creek at Mount Wright heads in back country. Smoke jumpers and ground crews from the Teton ranger district were handling suppression as forest service officials in Great Falls reported. Mount Wright lies in the Teton district with headquarters at Choteau.
Choteau business leaders held a special session to address a severe housing shortage. Dr J A March and Dr J C McCarty may leave with their families without immediate housing, and local teachers also require rooms or apartments to continue teaching. Residents are urged to report available accommodations to the Chateau business head.
Supt. W. J. Shirley announced all high school and grade school teachers for the coming year at Chateau. Six new high school instructors and three new grade teachers join an eight member grade staff. one previous year’s teacher retained. First faculty meeting set for 10 am Saturday Aug 31. Registration Aug 28 29 30. locker deposits of 3l required. Living quarters for two teachers urgently needed.
J C Salmon and Jim Peters of Choteau found Arthur Kline aged 71 dead for about three weeks in his cabin five miles west of Choteau. The recluse known as Rip Van Winkle lived alone, prospected coal, owned 80 acres, and died likely of natural causes. Burial followed in Choteau cemetery.
Dryland harvest in Teton county shows more than half complete with sizable wheat output and high planting for the coming season. Elevators at Dutton Collins and Power overflow as some farmers store wheat on the ground. rail cars scarce for shipment. Cotton yields range 20 to 60 bushels per acre, averaging 20 to 30 in the region. Overall county picture incomplete.
The annual Flower Show and Tea hosted by the Chateau Women's club last Saturday drew praise for beauty and proceeds. Winners included Mrs. William Olsen and Mrs. Tom Olson in Sweet Peas. Mrs. Gus Kade and others in Gladiolas. Phil Cole for Roses. and many more across 89 entries. Net receipts reached 50.23 with further donations expected.
