The Choteau Woman’s Club hosts a flower show and tea at the Lion club rooms this Saturday from 2 to 5 pm. Proceeds fund the public library. Members are reminded dues are due and a certified flower judge will adjudicate the village exhibit.
Lions club heard Navy talking pictures detailing U S submarine successes against Japanese ships and merchant fleet in the recent war. Films featured sub Trigger and rescue subs that saved 500 aviators while narrators noted significant sinking shares. A Stork shower honored new fathers Lowell Scott and Cecil Cole as guests and plaque from Lions International was presented for meeting membership quota.
Former pupils of A B Guthrie Sr will honor their former principal with a banquet on August 22. Attendees are former students from 1900 to 1908 and those not reached should contact Mrs Obert Peterson of Chateau for invitations. The event is set for 7 o'clock at the Lutheran church in Chotesi.
The Teton county agricultural conservation committee announces 1947 crop wheat loan rates set at 90 percent of parity with a base loan of 51,693. Loans mature by April 30, 1948, and purchase agreements run to December 31, 1947. Farmers sign with a $1.50 service fee to secure a 90 percent parity market for wheat, deliver before payment.
In Teton County the grain harvest is underway with about 65 trucks daily at Chateau elevators, two thirds full, and first winter wheat sent to General Mills on August 2. Harvest should improve next week though storage and shipping limits strain elevators. yields are near average but may fall about one third from 1946, while protein is high and wheat sells around 2.25 dollars a bushel. Rain and moisture in wheat heads delay some fields and hay was held up by a 26 inch Chateau area rain.
The city council adopted a budget adding 9 263 dollars in revenue for 1947 48 raising the total levy from 25 to 37 mills. The 12 mill bond sinking and interest levy funds water system upgrades and a septic tank project while other shares cover general, streets, parks, cemetery and airport needs. City Clerk Jim Sulgrove noted the assessed value base and the museum levy elimination with the levy remaining close to last year’s despite the extra bond mill.
Nine members of the Teton Saddle Club began a 14 day pack trip from the Ray Gibler ranch end of the south fork Teton canyon road. The itinerary includes Gates Park and Salmon Lake with four days at the latter, ending with a return over the same trails to Chateau.
Marion Warneke of Lewistown succeeds Melvin Mast as supervisor of the Choteau Welfare department with offices in the courthouse. She earlier worked in the Great Falls welfare office and studied at Pacific Lutheran College.
The Chateau Acantha issued a late edition this week due to a newly hired lino type operator still gaining experience.
Mary Alice Lyon of Cambridge Massachusetts visits Chateau this week assisting the editorial staff. A former newspaper reporter she spent time with the Acantha during the visit.
James Fairbairn of Paris Ontario brings a collection of early Choteau photographs to town. The trove includes a 1898 Chateau school opening card listing officials and portraits of Ed Larkin Hank Vestal Wink Edgar and other locals. County officers from around 1900 appear in tin types alongside studio shots by Clinkerrbeard's in Chateau.
The note links Penny assessor and A. C. Warner to Fairbairn who is now employed by the Spankling Athletic Co at Ontario.
County officials urge vigilant fire prevention as the driest months approach. Sheriff Al Peterson equips a pump truck with 525 gallons of water to fight blazes in fields and pastures, and urges farmers to assist firefighting crews at any incident.
Four new teachers join Chateau schools for the fall term starting September 8. Helen M. Hansen of Withee Wisconsin will teach upper grades with four and a half years of experience. Marjorie E. Shea of Wibaux will teach mathematics and English after two years teaching. David O. McKee of Billings will instruct upper grades with seven years of experience. Arline A McKee will teach primary grades with eight years of experience. Superintendent Graham seeks living quarters for a primary instructor with four children.
The Chateau Junior band directed by Wilbert Maynard will close summer with 12 marches and specialty numbers on main street Saturday night. Program includes School Spirit , Portsmouth , The Unwilling Scholar , Andante Verdi Allegretto , Beethoven Playmates , Folk Song Two Famous Walters , Wakitenfet Folk Melody arranged by Webber, Preshenan's March.
Aileen Ferris of Choteau named assistant grand warder for the Falls session of the Eastern Star of Montana to be held in Great Falls August 21 to 23. The event opens with an informal session at the Civic Center and features remarks by visiting officers, tributes to flags, ritual work, a picnic at the Falls, and officer installations.
An auction sale will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 at the Halvor Daley residence featuring hundreds of household items. The McDonald block will also offer furniture to bidders during the sale.
