Treasure State farm and livestock war on rodents
Montana state officials report a FY ending July 1 expenditure of $75,000 to control ground squirrels and prairie dogs, saving an estimated $375,000. The program used nearly 90 tons of strychnine treated grain with involvement of about 10,000 farmers. The Columbian ground squirrel is the major pest, with calcium cyanide increasingly used though risks to livestock exist. Prairie dogs are the easiest to destroy and are declining, while Richardson ground squirrels threaten corn stands and spread of disease vectors in Bitter Root valley.
