The U S News and World Report outlines a reflationary strategy to expand credit use. President Truman advocates big spending, possible tax changes, and looser money controls to revive prosperity and raise national income, while questioning how long such spending can continue.
The era of GI Bill jobless benefits ends for Montana veterans discharged before July 1947 as of July 25 1949 transferring jobless insurance responsibility to the state. Veterans discharged after that date retain two years of protection under the Veterans Readjustment Allowance Act, while federal action could revive federal payments. The Veterans Administration via the Montana Unemployment Compensation Commission has paid about 16 million dollars to unemployed and self employed veterans since the program began in September 1944 through July 1949.
A Montana study reviews wartime federal payments to veterans from 1944 to 1949. It notes 60 000 veterans, 24 000 did not apply, 28 000 sought unemployment benefits, and only about 1 400 drew the full 52 week subsidy. The report argues the 52 20 label was misleading and cites substantial self employed subsidies and jobless payments.
