West Pointer Clarke and the Indian frontier in Montana
West Point graduate Malcolm Clarke rose from army cadet to trader, twice clashed with Indians, earned the name Nesokeio or Four Bears, and weathered sieges at Fort Benton. His life intertwined with Mountain Chief and Netuscheo, ending at Little Prickly Pear after a feud sparked by stolen horses. General Sherman visited his grave in 1877 and recalled their cadet bond.
