About 2 200 colored eggs were found within minutes after the siren marked the start of the annual Easter egg hunt at the courthouse lawn. The event featured pay eggs sponsored by local businesses, mostly worth ten cents, with lower amounts on some eggs to stretch prizes.
About 100 people attended the 35th Lions Charter Night banquet featuring Maurice Perstein, organizer of Operation Philippines. He outlined a Lions driven aid program with land grants, farm tools, and water wells funding in 40 communities, aided by late President Ramon Magaysay and Lions in Nevada and California. Attendees included D. P. Fabrick, Don Wilcox, Eli Scraba, Leo Murphy, Stan Morris, and Carl Nutter, with Nutter a district governor candidate.
Joe R. McAuley, 48, brother of Dr. Arthur McAuley, suffered severe lacerations and a mild concussion when his motorcycle flipped two miles north of Pendroy on a highway Monday. He was treated at Teton Memorial Hospital and later at Malmstrom Air Base hospital. McAuley, a technical Sergeant with SAGE in Great Falls, was reported to have lost control after coasting down a hill while attempting to kickstart the bike. His nephew Bob McAuley found him and notified authorities.
Six candidates joined the primary slate this week with Lorraine Maynard seeking county treasurer and Albert Becker aiming for sheriff on the Democratic side. Republican filings include Thomas L. Moore for sheriff and precinct officers Arnold L. Hango n, Verna Stott, and Elmer B. Bliss. Mr and Mrs Olen Rausch hosted their son and daughter-in-law from Great Falls William Koski.
Jeob Gordon McOmber files petition to retain for re election. He attended a state high school in 1938 and served in the navy during World War II. Afterward he farmed in Fairfield and worked in construction as a truck driver. He has held multiple local posts including Fairfield school board and airport commission. He is president of Greenfield Farmers Oil Co. and has served on legislative committees for agriculture highways and appropriations. He is married to Marian Corbett and has children.
April 30 marks the last day to file applications for payments under the wool incentive program for the 1961 marketing year. Growers must submit sales records to receive payments, with payments based on the national average price received by farmers. Payments for wool and lambs depend on early filing, and final payments will be issued as soon as possible, no later than April 30.
Rexall Drug led team events with a 2985 score while Roger Toren topped singles at 685 handicap. The Mixed Doubles tourney at A & K Lanes offers national and regional prizes, including trips to London and Paris and various appliances for state winners. Winning teams earn coaching from a nationally rated bowler.
James Ellsworth Schubring 52, of Havre, a rigger on the Minuteman project, died after falling down an 82 foot missile silo five miles south of Chateau while a protective platform was being Tigged. Mike Sporty escaped as the platform tipped. Schubring, WWII veteran, leaves a widow Elizabeth and four children. Funeral set in Sidney with burial at Fairview. Flare will speak at a Legion banquet in Chateau.
Choteau High School hosts an expected field of 11 teams for Saturday’s Choteau Invitational. The Bulldogs, led by Ray Yeager and Jerry Asay, seek a strong showing against Cut Bank Shelby and Great Falls Central, with finals set after 10 a.m. and the public welcome free of charge.
Coffman, former army veteran, seeks the sheriff role in Teton County on the Republican slate. He previously ran a Texaco service station in Fairfield and later worked as a parts man for Ford and International dealerships. An active member of the Fairfield Fire Department and Fairfield Saddle Club.
Chateau High School releases an honor roll list for the fifth six weeks. Senior Carol Howard leads with 6.8, followed by Roberta Crocker and Rodney Singh. Juniors show a 7.5 leader Tausse Tmchot, with others like Hansen and Stokes. Sophomores show a 7.7 percent honor roll rate, freshmen total ten on the honors list.
County offices in Fairfield and other locations urge all farmers and ranchers who ordered shelterbelt trees to come in or send someone to collect them by April 30. Trees should be planted as soon as possible for best survival. if immediate planting isn’t possible, store roots moist in a cool shaded place.
Charles R. Spence, 66, died recently in Kalispell. A native of Edinburgh Scotland he came with his parents to eastern Montana at age five. He lived in Choteau for two and a half years where he was a member of the Choteau Mercantile. He later worked as a salesman for Robinson Co. on Great Falls and retired in 1961 before moving to Kalispell.

Easter Sunday morning a small blaze started in the trailer home of Mrs. Gertie Hughes from an overheated oil stove. Firemen faced siren failure delaying response. about five firefighters fought the flames and smoke damage was noted. later investigators found bird nests clogged the siren at the hall.
A statewide conference on government will be held at the Rainbow Hotel in Great Falls on Friday April 27 as a luncheon meeting. Dr. Ernest L. Wilkinson of Brigham Young University will speak on Private Enterprise and Constitutional Government. J E Tenge of Billings will chair the meeting with talks on taxes and education. Robert N. Helding of Libby will summarize the conference and outline future directions. The luncheon costs 1.75 and the event is open to the public.
Tarraine Magliita announces candidacy for county treasurer on the Democratic ticket. Mrs Maynard served as treasurer from 1955 to 1960 and as chief deputy since 1959, but did not run in 1960 due to state term limits. Born in Minnesota, she moved to Teton County in 1914 and has long served as county office staff.
The First National Bank of Fairfield will host an open house in its new building on Saturday April 28 from 11 am to 3 pm. Attendees receive a chance to win a $25 savings account and enjoy refreshments. The bank showcases wood paneling, new tellers counters, an enlarged bookkeeping department and check desks, with Chateau contractors and local firms noted.
City Council agreed to purchase a 1962 Ford Fairlane police car from M R Motors of Choteau for 1794 delivered in 30 days and paid in 12 installments of 149.50. The council reviewed bids for a city fire truck from J R Sammons and Sons Billings Moriarty Enterprises Central Fire Truck Manchester American LaFrance and M R Motors. They will consult with the fire department before finalizing a decision, considering equipment quality capacity durability and service availability.
The annual Women's City bowling tournament starts this weekend with singles and doubles events. Team events will be contested during regular league times Monday afternoon and Tuesday night.
Mr and Mrs Friis Hansen of Chateau invite neighbors to an open house at their home on April 27 from 7 to 10 p m in observance of their 25th wedding anniversary.
