Chicago April 10 J Ogden Armour leading packer and grain dealer urged government price fixing for all food products. He called for government supervision of production and prices, including a guaranteed $1.50 per bushel minimum for wheat and possible meat price controls, plus meatless days to conserve supplies.

German submarines sink 686 neutral ships by April 3

Washington reports 686 neutral vessels sunk by German submarines since the war began through April 3, including 19 Americans. More than one third of losses involve neutral ships, with many others terrorized into port and a sizable but unspecific death toll aboard neutrals and belligerent steamers. Official notes say about 250 Americans have perished on neutral and belligerent steamers combined.

Blast at Eddystone munitions plant kills many

Chester Pa April 10 at least 100 persons mostly girls died and 200 or more were injured in a double explosion at the Eddystone munitions plant owned by the Russian government. The blast followed by a fire wrecked the shrapnel building and adjacent shell storage. Officials report swift rescue, arrests whispered, work to resume soon.

The hearing on the appeal from the formation of school district No. 59 out of district No. 21 at Fairfield was held Tuesday. The board dismissed the appeal on the grounds of no jurisdiction due to formation starting under a wrong section of law.
