A Chicago and Alton train carrying negro workers reached Virden Illinois where armed miners attacked. Gunfire killed Deputy D. B. Kiley and injured several, with seven reported dead and eight wounded according to test reports. The siege continued as a second volley erupted from the stockade area and bystanders were exposed to sustained gunfire.
A Washington official party to the Omaha exposition departed from the capital Monday by two trains on the Pennsylvania and Baltimore and Ohio lines. Treasurer T M Cunningham was elected a director, replacing Hon Patrick Walsh of Augusta who resigned. Directors then re-elected the old officers for the coming year.
