Telegram reports the death of ex Senator Cas W Jones in Detroit at 3 o clock this morning. His remains will be brought to Pensacola for interment and arrive Friday. Also noted is an advertisement citing Chamberlain’s Colic Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy with a testimonial from B Gresham of Gaarsville La claiming cure after other medicines failed. Available in 25 and 50 cent sizes from local merchants.
In Chipley a discussion on teachers and public order at the Institute is praised for its honesty and dedication. The old gentleman’s remark that a teacher should do the best she can reveals a deeper insight about value in honest work.
The committee on resolutions thanks Orion Lodge Chipley and Chipley citizens for hospitality during the second district meeting held October 7 9. At the meeting in Chipley the death of Edwin B. Speight was announced. A Mason and devout Presbyterian, he was 34, educated at DeFuniak Springs, taught schools, studied law, and recently began practice in Westville before dying of pneumonia after ten days. The convention mourns a valuable member and offers condolences to relatives, with resolutions to be entered in minutes and shared with local press.
A letter from Oct 19 1897 describes the Colored Campmeeting in Chipley. Elders Henshaw and Call lead the ministry as local officials and citizens welcome visiting clergy. The writer credits white residents for hospitality and urges Pensacola District to consider Chipley as a permanent camp ground.
