Ottmar Mergenthaler Dies Inventor of Linotype
Ottmar Mergenthaler died in Baltimore on Saturday morning from consumption. Born May 10, 1854 in Germany, he invented the linotype setting machine which revolutionized printing and is used by papers in leading cities. An explosion at Ben Reed’s gunhouse five miles southwest of Gainesville Georgia killed J J Warf and mortally wounded Ben Reed owner and Lon Mooney engineer. The blast occurred as workers operated the boiler possibly from cold water entering a hot, poorly maintained boiler. The engine and boiler were hurled through the second story and roof, carrying debris about 125 feet.

Ferry Boat Chicago Cut In Two In New York Waters
The ferry Chicago operating between Jersey City and New York was split by the City of Augusta at 12 35 am on the New York side of the North River. It sank in seven to eight minutes with 30 to 40 aboard including four women. Survivors used life preservers or swam to the shore though boats were not launched due to the brief sinking interval. Captain Durham escaped and reports all crew except Fireman Fromme accounted for. Fromme may have been drowned or crushed in the hold.
