Hooker’s proposal for prosecuting attorneys’ powers passed 12 to 5, and Hilliard’s railroad interference bill passed 23 to 0. Will’s oyster bed protection measure passed 20 to 3. Carson’s road obstruction bill passed 20 to 2. Reeve’s school tax levy bill passed 17 to 5. McLin’s freshwater fishing ban passed 16 to 2. House action included Bradham amending dentistry practice laws and exempting licensed dentists from license tax. A humorous aside noted razorback hog owners tying knots in tails, with a railroad liability quip.
Special venire and jury selection dominated Vern on Court News as the State’s case against R A Harrell proceeded. Harrell was found guilty of murder in the third degree with a five year state prison sentence and a $12 000 bond set as court adjourned on May 25. The Barfield liquor case resulted in a guilty plea with a $100 fine and costs or six months imprisonment.
