Congressional Democrats finally topple the Czar as party leaders withdraw support and demand restraint in rulings. The move places the Democrats in control, signaling a shift in power and forcing the executive to concede.
Deputy pension commissioner Smith received notice from secretary Noble that he might retire from future service. He is the last of Corporal Tanner's favorites and appears satisfied. He res tires with little honor but gains cash and higher pension from 36 to 72 dollars per month plus back pay up to 6000 dollars from his own re rating.
Kansas farmers petition the governor to convene a special session to enact stay laws aiding heavily mortgaged farms. They request at least two years to live on farms, relief from foreclosures, and stays on judgments notes and mortgage bonds.

Burrago New York February 5 1885 libel action filed by Rev Dr Ball against the New York Evening Post seeks 25000 damages arising from 1884 presidential campaign coverage. Trial before Judge Daniels includes testimony by E H Godkin and Dr Ball with defense led by John G Milburn and Franklin D Locke.
Heavy rains and a washout west of The Dalles cut telegraph with Portland as a construction train's crew rode a bridge sixty eight feet high. The engine cleared but the tender toppled onto a caboose, killing ten and injuring sixteen. Conductor French and Engineer George among the injured. A medical party was dispatched to the scene.
Adjutant General Kelton’s bulletin lists the U S militia as 7 697 commissioned officers 91 371 enlisted men and 7 208 498 available in states with 214 officers 2 565 men and 101 673 availables in territories 141 officers 1 644 men and 42 000 availables in the District of Columbia for a grand total of 8 052 officers 108 290 men and 7 552 171 availables The report notes Arkansas Florida and South Dakota offered no regular militia or reports New York leads with 748 officers 13 473 men and 650 000 availables Pennsylvania follows with 628 officers 7 865 men and 650 000 availables.
A north bound Northern Pacific passenger train struck a handcar between Sr. Cloup and Clear Lake yesterday morning. Three section men on the handcar were reported killed though their names could not be ascertained. The Manitoba and Northern Pacific tracks run close together and the men had lifted their car to the Northern Pacific track to avoid an approaching train.
In Monmouth township Melville Beard attacked his younger brother William as he came to aid. Nadits fired a shotgun at William at close range, striking him in the abdomen. Beard was arrested and jailed in Topeka after the incident.
New York reports that due to strikerelated resource use the Chicago and Eastern Illinois preferred dividends will be discontinued. Company officials say there is no floating debt and no plan to incur one.

Lyon City at the base of Lyon mountain in Montana was buried by a snowslide Sunday morning. Two miners were killed and a large amount of property was destroyed. The slide measured about three four miles wide.
