Mexican authorities expect the toll from hurricane Hilda to rise beyond 100 as rescuers count the dead, with Tampico hit hard and many missing after rooftops were swept away. At least 74 fatalities were confirmed in Tampico alone, while crews described villages reduced to pockmarks in the earth.
A cool front will lower temperatures in the Panhandle and South Plains by Wednesday night and Thursday with rain spreading across Texas. Light rains linger along the coast and extreme South Texas, while the lower Rio Grande Valley received .89 inches from recent soaking rain. a tornado sighting occurred near Edinburgh but did not touch ground.

A sudden windstorm at the Tri-State Fair carnival area toppled about 12 tents injuring 75 to 100 people, three severely. Children among the injured were hospitalized. Red Cross and hospitals treated others as wind gusts up to 60 mph and rain prompted emergency actions while the fair continued.

The initial focus is whether electric utilities fall under monopolistic control and examines the Washington Water Power Co merger with Puget Sound Power & Light Co. and ties to Electric Bond & Share and Ebasco.
A spokesman for Service Fire Insurance Company denied a Texas accusation of overcharged auto policy premiums possibly totaling millions. Texas official Washington Whitesides said misclassification led to higher rates and noted refunds of about 89 000 had been issued, with many policyholders unresponsive.

Washington reports only 648 youths aged 17 or 18 have signed up for the Army’s new six month reserve training program set to begin October 3. Assistant Defense Secretary Burgess says enrollment will rise with a stronger campaign, though 5,000 in training by year end seems unlikely. The plan targets 90,000 in training by June 30, 1956, with enlistees serving active duty for six months then seven and a half years in the ready reserve.
A four engine refueling plane from the 341st Air Refueling Squadron crashed during a routine landing at DOW Air Force Base Maine. Twelve fliers and three Air Force firemen were hospitalized with injuries. The most seriously hurt were Maj Bert H Lynn Jr S Sgt Joseph A McCaughey and 2nd Lt Louis Grimmeson.
A 35 minute jury verdict in Houston finds John Edward McHenry, 23, a Black yardman, guilty of raping a 34 year old white mother of six in her bedroom during the early hours of July 19. McHenry admits entering the room after smoking marijuana but denies the assault.
The Childress District remains ahead of the state average in Series E and H bond sales despite August slowing. Cottle County leads with 103.5 percent of its quota sold, followed by Childress County at 79.3 percent. Gene Smith chairs, with C. L. Reorganization meeting of Cub Scout Pack No. 61 was held last night with Cubmaster Eddie Mc Connell in charge. Assisting were James Ragsdale Guy Jones and Larry Lawrence. The pack is sponsored by Chil dress Elks Lodge No. 1113 whose Exalted Ruler is Ragsdale.
