Watchman Saves Paducah From Possible Arson

An alert night watchman saved Paducah from a major fire early today after two Fort Worth men, S C Stewart and G R Nesbit, were arrested for attempting to burn Vernon Goodwin’s International Harvester dealership. The guard chased one suspect, who begged not to be killed, then escorted both to the county sheriff. A 55-gallon gasoline barrel and a box of matches were found at the scene. Continued on Page Two.

Mansfield Officials Face Court Over School Enrollments

In Fort Worth three Mansfield school officials R L Huffman superintendent O C Rawdon board president and Willie L Brown principal were to give depositions in 96th district court regarding the failure of Negro pupils to enroll in the all white Mansfield high school. NAACP attorney L Clifford Davis filed the action. A Mansfield crowd had prevented enrollment of Negro pupils at the all white school and the pupils later enrolled in a Fort Worth Negro school.

Cool Air May Break Heat Wave Across Texas

Near record heat may be chased from northern Texas by a mass of cool air arriving tonight. Thundershowers brushed parts of the Panhandle with more possible tonight and Tuesday. Salt Flat reported 59 as the state's low. Fraser and Cole in the Rockies registered 12. Forecast calls for cooler conditions in the north by Tuesday morning with scattered showers along the Red River and northeast Texas, plus Gulf Coast and West Texas rain. No statewide rainfall in the last 24 hours. Presidio hit 106, while Corpus Christi and Galveston topped 87 and 79 respectively.

Clay School Board Bars All Black people From White School

In Clay Kentucky the Webster County school board barred four Black children from the all white elementary school. Guards lined the front as families moved to Rosewald Negro school at Providence. White parents cheered the decision and a guard contingent remained on duty.

Kefauver Promises 100 Percent Crop Parity For Farmers

Estes Kefauver reaffirmed the Democrats pledge to achieve 100 percent parity for farm prices in a campaign stop at Janesville Wisconsin. He outlined an agriculture program including a food stamp plan and expanded school milk and lunch programs and production payments as a method to extend price support to non basic staples and perishables. Wisconsin marked the third state in his 160 day swing through 15 states.
