Egyptian air force sorties retaliate against Israeli strikes in Sinai after a major assault. Seven to eight Egyptian planes reportedly downed, while Israeli planes hit guerrilla positions in Beisan Valley and Jordan front tensions rise. Egypt claims dual strikes deep in Sinai. casualties cited on both sides.
Ann Arbor resident Roger Staples challenged junk mail by invoking obscenity law, demanding no more advertising deliveries to his home. Assistant postmaster Richard Schneeberger returned the mail to Staples as obscene under the beholder principle.
Senator Everett M. Dirksen 73 died Sunday after a heart ailment. President Nixon ordered his jet to Peoria and a motor procession to Pekin where services planned for 2 p.m. EDT. Family and high officials attended including Joy Baker and Senator Percy. burial in his Illinois hometown followed a life of national leadership.
Bobbi Henderson was elected treasurer to fill the unexpired term during the Wednesday meeting. The council fixed meetings on the third Monday at 7 PM with the first on September 22. Bumper stickers at 50 cents each were distributed, and fifty council pins were ordered for members. Ricky McIntyre served as vice president and Benny Land as president. Members present included Genie Allen Cora Cordell Earl Griffin and the named officers.
In Belfast a barbed wire barrier dubbed the Belfast Wall rises in the heart of the city under British army engineers. Protestants and Catholics, plus clergy, watch as bulldozers and drills build a one and a half mile line from both ends toward the center. Catholic militants warn they will resist dismantling.
Retailers and credit bureau executives urged the Federal Trade Commission to drop a proposed ban on mailing unsolicited credit cards. They called it regulatory overkill and said consumers appreciate receiving cards as a sign of good credit risk.
Last rites for Mrs. Lillian Sledge Barbee 95 were to be held at First Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Interment followed at Childress Cemetery under Greenwood Funeral Home Fort Worth. Surviving are five sons, one daughter, one sister, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
A three day cease-fire honoring Ho Chi Minh collapsed as a strong Communist ground attack hit an American base and shelling of 41 Allied targets began. U S forces, after tacitly observing the truce, returned fire with B52 bombers dropping 360 tons on positions. General Abrams left Vietnam for Washington to attend a Vietnam policy conference.
President Nixon will address the 24th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 18. He plans private meetings with foreign representatives and is expected to discuss Vietnam and Middle East tensions. A White House briefing noted a Vietnam strategy session at the White House Friday morning.
Moisture fell in the Childress area with several local readings. Reports show varied totals from traces to 1.50 inches at Tell, including .08 at Kirkland and .09 at the FAA station.

Dr. Denton A. Cooley, the first surgeon to implant an artificial heart in a human, resigns from Baylor College of Medicine to work full time at the Texas Heart Institute in the field of cardiac replacement. The split follows disagreements over research control and department approval, with Cooley retaining titles at St. Luke’s and Texas Children’s Hospital.
General Motors announced price increases averaging 125 per car with 38 dollars added for new equipment boosting base prices about 3.9 percent. The move is expected to set a trend for the auto industry.

Washington UPI reports air traffic controllers at Indianapolis Weir Cook warned the FAA six weeks before a collision killed 83 observers that inadequate radar coverage made the area unsafe. They warned that another crash could happen tomorrow at Indianapolis or other airports with similar radar gaps.
