About 12,000 residents remained isolated on Galveston Island as Hurricane Carla battered the area with 112 mph winds and 9.1 foot tides. Water 3 to 6 feet covered streets, and the causeway to the mainland was blocked. John Sealy Hospital reported two feet of water in its basement and a venomous snake bite case among the wounded.

Collision near US 287 leaves two vehicles damaged
Patrolman Bob Akerman reports a Sunday afternoon collision about 4:05 near Childress at the US 287 intersection with a county road. A pickup driven by local resident Bob Akerman attempted a left turn as Roy S. Hines of Childress in a car traveling west on 287 passed by. No injuries were reported despite considerable damage to both vehicles.

Two Injured In Accident On 504 Avenue Few
In the early hours of Sunday two people were hospitalized after a crash at 504 Avenue Few. Fred Morey of Williams Arizona suffered broken ribs and his wife a broken arm. both were released and transported to Houston by a son. The City Police report says Morey slept at the wheel, hitting Walter Rothwell’s parked car, which was facing west. Rothwell’s auto was pushed 140 feet. Morey received a ticket for negligent driving.
