Agricultural Leaders See Northwest Texas Research Field Day
Agricultural leaders farmers and county agents from three counties visited field day tours on soil climate variations and cotton demonstrations. Participants included State Sen. Andy Rogers and County Agent Chile Smith with Grady Dorn of Chillicothe, plus Meshing partners from Wheeler Collingsworth and Hall counties. Demonstrations covered cotton variety tests fertilizer use Johnson Grass and field bindweed control and grain sorghum varieties. Tours occurred Wednesday in Wheeler Thursday in Collingsworth Friday in Hall with a noon luncheon for about 50 Farm Bureau and Chamber of Commerce members.

Hurricane Donna battered Florida's west coast with 121 mph winds at Fort Myers and 150 mph on the Keys. The storm cut a multimillion dollar path of destruction, left widespread outages, and caused at least one death in Fort Myers with reports of injuries elsewhere. Emergency calls and evacuations were ordered for low lying areas along beaches and the St Johns River as the system moved inland toward Jacksonville.

Frank Benton Preston 79 died Friday evening at 706 Ave B SW after months of illness. Services at 2 pm today in First Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Allen and others. Burial in Childress Cemetery. Survived by wife Emma Owens Preston, three sons, one daughter, two brothers, two sisters, eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren. He was a retired farmer and Baptist. Born December 27 1808 in Fayette Missouri and came to Childress in 1892.
