Weary motorists faced deadly highways as California led the nation with 324 traffic deaths since the weekend began. Texas and Pennsylvania followed, with states Alaska Idaho and New Tall missing reports. The National Safety Council warned the Labor Day toll could reach about 460, surpassing the 1961 all time high.
The Labor Day travel period in Texas pushes toward a DPS forecast of 29 highway deaths with 23 dead by Labor Day eve. Violent fatalities rise to 38. a fatal multi vehicle crash in Lufkin leaves six dead while other accidents claim motorists and bystanders across the state.
Patricia Ann McRaney from Mississippi enters the Miss America pageant among first arrivals in Atlantic City. She follows in the footsteps of former Miss Americas Lynda Lee Mead and Mary Ann Mobley. The pageant opens with registration and rehearsals as judging runs Wednesday through the weekend. The winner earns a $10 000 scholarship and up to $80 000 in appearance and modeling fees, with $25 000 scholarships for runners up.
Three Vernon youths ages 16 and 15 were arrested around midnight Sunday by officers Dave Ricks and Finis Wrinkle while burglarizing Buckley’s service station on 287 Northeast. They later admitted burglarizing Leckett High School in Wil larger County and are being held for Vernon officers.
Clear skies were forecast for most of Texas with warm temperatures as the Labor Day weekend neared its end. A few clouds were noted around San Angelo and in the Big Bend, while light scattered showers moved from Alice to Brownsville overnight. Overnight lows ranged from 55 in Alpine to 80 in Galveston.

Earl K. Long three times Louisiana governor and congressman died at 65 from a heart attack after a period of erratic public life and mental health hospitalizations. Doctors said he died peacefully under an oxygen tent after earlier heart trouble and a tense political comeback marked by controversy and sensational stunts.
Two Harnett County Indian pupils Juanita Chance and Huey Maynard staged a sit-in at the all white Dunn High School defying a court order. They arrived by taxi and entered with white students as police observed and officials barred newsmen. District Solicitor Archie Taylor met with the board of education to discuss the act.
Scripps-Howard reporter Henry N. Taylor, 32, was killed by machinegun fire while covering fighting between Congolese troops and Baluba tribesmen near Tchelenge, 17 miles southeast of Bakwanga. The UPI correspondent was the first American journalist killed in the Congo incident. The U.N. and U.S. embassy confirmed the death and arranged a flight for his body.
The Congo chamber of deputies planned a meeting to discuss Premier Patrice Lumumba's leadership as Russian backed troops battle Bakwanga area bow and arrow fighters in Kasai Province. Three BBC Reuters and Daily Express reporters arrested by Lumumba’s forces in Bakwanga were released unharmed.

Andrew Jackson Hammonds age 78 died at 8 45 am at his home after a long illness. Funeral at 4 pm Tuesday at Assembly of God Church with Rev. Lloyd McIntosh and Orville Thornton officiating. Interment in Childress cemetery. Born August 19 1882 in Jacksboro Texas he married Ludellar Love June 9 1901 in Jacksboro. He farmed near Floydada and in Childress County before retiring. Survivors include his widow and a son J P Hammonds of Chillicothe. Continued on Page Three.
