Washington officials urged caution after Khrushchev pulled missiles and bombers from Cuba. Despite a clear win for the United States, they warned that Cold War tensions remain and a broader peace could be fragile. Assistant Secretary Harlan Cleveland warned against assuming a Soviet retreat.
Three young Germans aged 19, 22, and 27 swam an icy river into the American sector of West Berlin on Saturday and were found on a snow covered riverbank by West Berlin police. They were hospitalized with exposure. The East German news agency accused arson on an electric transformer on the elevated railway, while West Berlin police denied knowledge of any fire. The Communist line claimed it endangered long distance rail traffic. West Berlin later noted possible repercussions on access. Separately East Germany protested WWII alliance nations about a planned West Berlin court proceeding against a Communist front organization linked to the outlawed Communist party, described by the front as the Nazi Victims Association.
Oil and gas shows remain absent as two wildcats near Childress County showings. The Leonard Turner well five miles northeast of Childress drills below 3,390 feet and aims for 5,000 feet while the Ehrle well northwest of Childress under the Brownlie, Wallace and Armstrong group drills below 6,100 feet toward 8,000.
The Childress Chapter of the American Cancer Society postponed its regular monthly meeting scheduled for Monday night. A new date will be announced later, according to president Mrs. Glen Stiner.

Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40 8, American Legion and Auxiliaries announce a Christmas dinner on December 3 at the Veterans Building. The 40 8 hosts, with Scotty Clements leading kitchen staff, will charge adults 1.25 and children 65 cents. Prizes, gifts for ladies and youngsters, bingo, a decorated tree, and decor by Legion and VFW Auxiliaries are planned.

A $100 drawing will be held in front of The Index at 6 30 p m with numbers for hundreds of prizes and cash. Santa will arrive at 6 54 p m on a fire truck. Free tickets to the Treasure Hunt will be given to visitors at the Booker Borden Regional Football Playoff game Friday night. Mrs. Juanita Hendrix Nixon 36 of Channelview was killed when her car lost control and struck a culvert in Houston. Police investigate burglary lead at Mrs. Ike West home in San Antonio. Three year old Dean Parker died and family injured in Houston freeway crash. Julian A. Messmith of Madill Oklahoma faced a federal 13 year sentence for false taxing returns.
An Old Fashioned Box Supper is planned for Saturday night December 1 at Fair Park. Sponsored by the Childress Riding Club, proceeds fund bleachers at the Rodeo Grounds. Leonard Terrell will auction boxes, Gene McCain and his West Texas Stump Jumpers perform, and attendees are asked to bring pies or cakes.
The Childress Coin Club plans a 7:30 p m meeting Monday announced by president Marvin Dobbs. Items from the Executive Committee will be discussed along with next year’s plans. An auction follows the business session and members are urged to arrive 10 minutes early to submit coins.
President Kennedy will fly Monday for a one day inspection tour of U S troops in Georgia and southern Florida. He will visit Fort Stewart Homestead and Boca Chica Naval Air Station to see units alert during the Cuban crisis and meet commanding officers faces to face.
